if you have witnesses, and they *saw* the guy hit the girl, then you can probably at least plead down to some kind of lesser charge - as long as you felt she was in some kind of grievious bodily danger.
yes, you went totally overboard - using more force than was necessary - but, you were also trying to do the right thing. believe it or not, this counts for something.
seriously, retain a lawyer. if the guys parents are going after you for attempted 2nd degree murder, then you need to have your own guy, not one of the public defender chumps (some are good, some can't tie their own shoelacs).
