These days it seems like everyone is getting into the idea of "going green" and reducing their carbon footprint. Even more recently there has been a conversation on whether we should open up the US coastline for offshore drilling.

What do you think about the idea of offshore drilling? What about other forms of energy? Is it possible to go too green?

We just wanted to deal with that issue... just a couple of point... just changing the attitude towards AIDS from being "Ew... AIDSY." to more like "Ah... Fun monkey disease."

I am all for off shore drilling with careful attention to do it in a way that is safe. we need to be increasing our independence on oil while at the same time increasing our dependence on other fuel sources.

But here's my thing... We, as Americans (and honestly humans in general), are kinda dumb. I think I would be okay with offshore drilling, except my main fear is that if we drill off shore, gas prices will decrease and we we will forget all about the real need to become less dependent on fossil fuels. As much as high gas prices are harsh and effect all of us negatively, I feel like it at least keeps the real need fresh in our mind, and that is to increase alternative energy usage.

I think that we have become aware that we do not have endless supplies of oil and that as other countries industrialize they will be competing with us for the oil. It is true that if gas prices are too low then we will be wasteful but we can't have them so high that people can not put food on their tables or even afford to go to work. What might serve as a lesson to someone who is in the middle class could be the final straw for the poor. I see the offshore drilling as a stop gap measure to tide us over while we build the nuclear plants and produce the electric cars etc.

I honestly don't see offshore drilling as being as effective as some people are saying. Between the amount of money it would take to start drilling, construction time and cost, and finally production all just to lower gas prices by roughly 20 cents?

I don't buy it. I just think all the time, money and energy could be better spent working us off of fossil fuels. Not to mention the amount of money we could turn towards alternative energy is we stopped throwing billions towards Iraq.

I share Ramus' concern that access to more oil will cause people to forget about our crippling dependence on foreign oil. Many people are simply too concerned with their day-to-day lives to think about issues that don't affect them in an immediate, tangible way. Couple this with leaders adept at pandering to short-term interests and you've got a bubbling cauldron of more challenging issues to face in the future. Thank goodness corn-based ethanol isn't gaining popularity... the irony of people LITERALLY choosing to fuel up their cars instead of feeding people might cause me to have an aneurysm.

That being said, I don't foresee a future anytime soon where we have no need of petroleum. Ignoring its role as a fuel component, remember that industrial machines are still lubricated by petroleum and it also makes up most of the plastics we use. We've got a lot of work ahead of us and if offshore drilling is a necessary stopgap while we search for a proper solution (I'm looking at you too, hybrid cars) then so be it.

Throw up some oil derricks off our coast and wait for people to complain that it ruins the view. Then tell 'em that they'll be torn down when we don't need them anymore.

But from what I have heard offshore drilling really isn't even going to make a real dent in the price of gas at the pump. So are we really just trying to start drilling offshore so that the American people think we're doing something?

Maybe that's my problem. I'd rather actually get something done instead of dupe the populace into thinking that I've doing something.

I think that yes; there is some duping that's being done, but honestly some people just want to be told lies that make them feel good. Frankly, I don't mind that as long as a real solution is in the works. You can crap in a dish and call it chocolate pudding just as long as you give me real chocolate pudding when I call you out.

Interesting word picture that will probably be with me all day.

I agree with you that some people feel the need to be duped. I suppose my suspicion comes from thinking that this stall tactic isn't going to produce a viable solution in a few years as much as just ride the wave until people are tired of "going green."

That is the other problem I have, since suddenly it's become cool to be green, everyone is trying to reduce their carbon footprint. Which I'm all about, but what happens when celebrities stop endorsing the planet green channel and suddenly we have a new cool thing?
